Liwa is the desert most UAE off-roaders dream about. In the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, on the edge of the Rub’ al Khali, the Empty Quarter, a crescent of oasis villages sits among some of the largest dunes on the Arabian Peninsula. It’s spectacular, and it’s unforgiving. Treat Liwa as a destination for experienced drivers, not a first trip.
When to go
The season runs from roughly November to March, when days are warm rather than dangerous. Summer temperatures in the Empty Quarter are extreme; breakdowns and recoveries that would be routine in winter can become life-threatening. Winter also brings popular events, such as the festival around the famous Moreeb Dune, when the area gets busy.
Getting there
Liwa is about two and a half hours from Abu Dhabi city and three and a half to four hours from Dubai, mostly on good highways. The towns around the oasis have fuel stations, shops and places to stay, so fill up and stock up before you head into the dunes.

Convoy rules for Liwa
- At least two vehicles, ideally three or more, with an experienced lead driver who knows the area.
- Radios for convoy communication, plus a satellite messenger or phone for emergencies.
- Keep the vehicle behind you in sight at every crest and turn.
- Tall sand flags so other drivers can see you over dune crests.
- Agree signals for stopping, stuck and recovery before you set off.

Vehicle and kit
Air down your tyres for soft sand and carry a quality compressor to re-inflate. Take a full recovery kit: tow straps, soft shackles, recovery boards, a shovel and a tyre deflator. Carry far more water than you think you need, at least several litres per person per day, plus food, shade, a spare tyre and a desert first-aid kit.
Camping and where to stay
Liwa has hotels and desert resorts, and wild camping is popular in winter. If you camp, choose flat ground well away from dune bases and tracks where vehicles may crest, keep fires small and contained, and take all rubbish home.
Plan the trip
