Aggressive mud-terrain treads look the part, but in soft sand they can dig rather than float. A good all-terrain tyre, aired down properly, is usually better in the dunes and much better on the motorway.
What to look for
- Strong sidewalls. Aired-down tyres flex a lot, and sidewalls take the punishment. Look for reinforced or three-ply sidewall construction.
- Load rating. Make sure the rating suits your vehicle’s weight plus passengers, fuel, water and gear. Heavy 4x4s may need light-truck (LT) tyres.
- Heat resistance. UAE road surfaces get extremely hot. Choose tyres from reputable brands with the right speed and load ratings.
- Sand-friendly tread. Evenly spaced tread blocks that don’t trap sand and help the tyre float.

Heat and sunlight age rubber faster than tread wears. Check the four-digit date code on the sidewall: “2324” means the 23rd week of 2024. Many UAE workshops recommend replacing tyres around five years old regardless of tread, and sooner if you see cracking, bulges or uneven wear. When buying new tyres, check the date code too, as tyres can sit in storage.
